How to get to Serra dos Mangues.
From Lisbon Airport:
Take A8 (Oeste) in direction Loures.
Follow A8 to Caldas da Rainha/Leiria.
After Caldas da Rainha take exit 21 direction Alfeizerao/Sao Martinho do Porto.
From the round about just before Sao Martinho take right, direction Nazare until you see a sign Serra dos Mangues on your left after 1800 meters.
Go up the hill and turn right. Continue into Serra dos Mangues, and you will see Restaurant Tipico da Serra on your right.
Continue for 200 meters and take second right. Rua dos Lavadouros. Go down and after "roundabout" go straight up. Rua do Ganhao (some letters have fallen off!).
You will see our house 50 meters away on your right.
Total distance from Lisbon around 90 km.
From Porto Airport take A1 to Leiria, go on A8 at Leiria, go of at Exit 21 and follow as per the above.
There are busses from Lisbon (Praca de Espanha) to San Martinho do Porto (4 km from our house, take taxi) and also there are trains to Sao Martinho from Lisbon.
What to do.
We have started a Guest Book with trips, restaurants etc, which you will find at our house. Kindly add more of your experiences but here are a few things we found out in 2005.
Restaurants.
Around the corner is Restaurant Tipico da Serra. Good Portuguese food for low prices. Huge portions. Try the Caldeirada de Peixe, a lot of fish for your money.
Generally if you go inland some, say, 20 km you will find many small restaurants at about one third of the price as compared to near the coast.
Please see our guest book for some more.
Beaches.
Salgado beach on walking distance, but it is a hilly track.
Beaches at Sao Martinho, Nazare and Lagoa de Obidos and several more around the corner.
Hang gliding on the hill opposite our house.
See book.
Worth visiting are Nazare (cable car to Alto Nazare), Caldas da Rainha (daily market, and special market on Monday), Batalha (Cathedral), Fatima, Serra de Candeeiros (National Park), and Alcobaca (Cathedral).
Supermarkets are in Caldas, Alfeizerao, Tornada. See book.
Restaurant da Serra also is a small supermarket but can not beat the big ones.
Bread and fish delivered to your house daily if you like. Bread at Euro 0,12 per piece at 09:00 hrs in the morning at your doorstep. When the neighbors start talking- the baker is coming.
Rent a car.
The cheapest rental company in the off season we found is Premier in the UK who delivers at the Airport: www.premiercarjet.com
In season: www.d-reizen.nl seems ok.
Map.
At Expedia travel’s website you can print a good map of the surroundings of our house.
Google>Expedia>Maps>find a map, fill in Mangues and zoom in.
Anymore questions please feel free to ask.
